Composite Rolls
Through extensive research and engineering, Universal Welding has developed Composite Rolls as replacements for typical steel mill roll applications.
Composite Rolls consist of a steel center mandrel, which is weld overlaid with our Heat shield 98 weld material. This combination results in a working surface hardness of 54/58Rc and vastly improves wearability over conventional roll materials.
Our comprehensive reconditioning process allows us to renew worn rolls at 60 percent less cost than replacement. All rolls are repaired with high-performance overlays and machined to OEM specifications.
You can count on reconditioned rolls from Universal Welding to reduce downtime, extend typical roll life and provide exceptional overall performance.
Processing Rolls
Customers rely on Universal Welding to provide complete maintenance services for their Process Roll requirements. In addition to emergency repairs, we offer complete roll maintenance programs to help reduce your downtime and reduce maintenance costs.

As with all our services, all rolls are cleaned and fully inspected before repair. We offer custom alloys for demanding applications including: Uniclad4, Uniclad8, and Heatshield98. Our metallurgical specialists can help you select a premium overlay alloy designed to provide the tough, wear-resistant properties necessary to lower your overall costs and improve product performance.
Straightener Rolls
Our capabilities allow us to offer complete mechanical maintenance services on Straightener Rolls. We can handle Medart rolls in sizes #1 through #10 and Sutton Rolls sets up to #60 KDT, #5B, and 2100 sizes. Roll chemistries H13, D-2, 52100, and 4340 analyses.
All rolls undergo nondestructible testing before and after pre-machining. Our preheat and stress relieving procedures assure quality and durability. Weld overlays are applied using automatic welding machines and selected alloy materials to achieve up to 58Rc hardness.
Final finish processing is performed using tracer attachments to assure compliance with all contours and tolerances.
Rounds
Universal Welding is equipped to handle turning of titanium and forged rounds.
Our qualified lathe operators can turn as-cast titanium rounds to remove outer-surface scale and imperfections to provide a bright metal, clean surface for further processing buy the customer.
We also assist forging customers by turning their black forgings to achieve specific diameters and length prior to end processing.
Shafting
Our assortment of lathes allows Universal Welding to furnish new and reconditioned shafting with diameters up to 50-inches and in lengths up to 30-feet. All machining is performed according to customer specifications. Our capabilities include:
Welding and Fabrication
Universal Welding offers a complete range of welding and fabrication services designed to handle most any mill maintenance requirement.
Our large-scale, car-type heat treating furnace provides us capability beyond the typical welding or fabrication repair shop. Proper heat treating is essential to providing reliable welds and exceptional durability in components subjected to constant stress conditions.
Where appropriate, our repair and reconditioning procedures include heat treating – at holding temperatures to within 5°F – to assure unmatched quality.
